Chapter 9

“So this guy Duncan is a crook, right?” Carl asked. They were following Duncan along a path across a hillside. Long grass carpeted the landscape, moving like a living thing under the constant wind. All around them were the massive, brooding stone heads that the island was famous for. It was a surreal place, even compared to the almost infinite variety of the Web. It had been a shock when the first of those heads turned towards them as they passed. Ahead, Duncan had laughed, anticipating their surprise.

“I replaced the carvings with a group of Anthramors. They make excellent guards and they thrive in this kind of atmosphere.”

He walked ahead of them now along the path without looking back. He still wore his immaculate suit, Jane’s satchel incongruously on his hip. Jane wasn’t dressed for a cold climate. Carl had insisted she take his overcoat. The sleeves swamped her hands. He stoically refused to shiver.

“Yes. Once upon a time he and I used fight the Imperium. We were rebels.”

“Sounds like a good cause.”

“Itold you,itwas ahopeless one.They gotus all,oneby one.

He decided he preferred to be criminal.”

“And you just ran.”

She bridled at the tone, looking up at him sharply. “Don’t

judge what you don’t know, Carl.”

“I wasn’t judging you.”

She grunted and looked away.

“So,what’s to stop him sellingus outto theImperium?” Carl

asked.

“I didn’t think he was capable.” Jane replied.

“And now?”

“He was desperate to persuade me to join him. I don’t know

what in but he made it clear once we got here I would be out of time.” She felt Carl take her hand from the depths of the sleeve and then something cold and metallic pressed into it. She looked down with surprise. It was one of the Weaver artefacts from her satchel, a rod the length of her hand. She looked at Carl who flashed her a glimpse of the silver sphere he carried.

“Where did you get these?” Jane hissed, casting frantic glances around at Duncan ahead of them and the Anthramor guards dotted around.

“When those oil creatures attacked us and I grabbed you. I grabbed the first thing to hand out of the satchel. Duncan never bothered to search me. I don’t think he considers a ‘Lesser’ being a threat. Are they useful?”

“That one is a weapon.” Jane whispered, nodding at the sphere. “It requires a trigger word and you throw it.”

“What does it do?”

“You can’t use it. Without the skills to use it correctly it would wipe out every living thing on this island.”

To his credit, Carl didn’t immediately drop the innocuous looking sphere. “There were probably more practical things I could have grabbed then but it might have a use. What about yours?”

“It’s a summoner. I collected several.”

“So, why don’t we just use it?” Carl asked.

“Because I’ve already summoned the Weavers. They always respond to a summons. Always. But they have a different experience of time to us. They are coming but they may not find me for centuries, or it could be in the next few seconds. They decide when the time is right for the Web to be changed.
